Text 15 Aug Holy Fuck; Z (1969)

Will Smith, where have you taken me? Not a sports guy, but I think his suggestions this last two weeks might be described as a “double hitter” - suggested political paranoia classics “Io Ho Para” (I Am Scared) and “Z”, which I just finished watching. Z (1969, directed by Costa Gavras) - how have I never seen this film? It was nominated for the Golden Palm the year it came out, and with good reason. The film invited me in with familiar faces Yves Montand (Le Cercle Rouge) as a leftist senator who advocates nuclear disarmament of his country and Bernard Fresson (French Connection II) as a passionate member of his entourage, and took me on a white knuckle journey of a nail biting intrigue. Rapidfire editing and solid performances propel the piece; those familiar with the work of Jean-luc Godard might recognize the photography of Godard’s DP, Raoul Coutard, who imbues the film with a documentarian aggressiveness. The second half is dominated by the performance of hollow cheeked, bespectacled Jean-Louis Trintignant (which snagged him the Best Actor award at the Cannes that year), whose commitment to the facts is constantly thwarted by the ham fisted tactics of a corrupt state. I hope I’m not doing a disservice to the inscendiary content of the film by saying I was mesmerized by the wardrobes -  why can’t people dress this way now? Tailored suits and lit cigarette dock worker cool. Unbelievable. I love this movie.
